What are the Indicators of a Plumbing Emergency?

There are a few key indicators of a plumbing emergency in any home. If you experience any of these signs, it is important to call a plumber right away.

  • Leaks are one of the most common indications of a plumbing emergency. Leaks can occur in sinks, bathtubs, toilets, or anywhere else that water flows. If you see water spilling out from under a sink, around a toilet, or streaming down your walls, it is definitely time to call for help.
  • Another sign of a plumbing emergency is strange noises coming from your pipes. If you hear gurgling, whistling, or hissing sounds coming from your drains, it could mean that something is wrong and needs to be fixed right away.
  • If you experience a sudden loss of water pressure, it could be a sign of a serious plumbing issue. Low water pressure can be caused by everything from a leaky pipe to a broken water heater. Call us right away if you notice a sudden change in your water pressure.
  • If your home’s water temperature suddenly changes, it could be a sign that something is wrong with your plumbing system. If the water in your shower becomes scalding hot or ice cold seemingly out of nowhere, there is probably a problem with your pipes or heater that needs to be addressed.
  • Slow drainage and high water bills  – If you notice your drains taking longer to drain than normal, if you’re paying more money on your water bill than normal (even without using extra water), or find any other type of irregularities, then it could mean one or many things. First, check for slow draining sinks/shower/tub. If you experience any of these signs, do not hesitate to call for help. A plumbing emergency can cause serious damage to your home and can be expensive to fix.
  • Wet spots on the floor – If you notice any wet spots on your floor, it could be a sign that there’s a leak somewhere in your plumbing system. If not addressed quickly, this can lead to water damage and even mold growth.
  • Strange smells – Sewer gas is hazardous and can cause illness, so if you smell anything strange coming from your drains, it’s best to call for help right away.

When is a Water Leak Considered an Emergency?

Depending on the severity of the leak, it can be deemed an emergency. If there is any structural damage to your property or water entering electrical fixtures, it is definitely an emergency, and you should call a professional right away. Other than that, if the leak is manageable and not causing any immediate danger, then you can wait until morning or during business hours to report it.

You should also be aware that a water leak could also cause mold growth. Learn more about how to protect your property from mold exposure.

What Should I Do Before My Plumber Arrives?

Plumbers offer a wide range of services, but what should you do before your plumber arrives for their first visit to your home or business?

  • Make sure you have a clear work area. The plumber will need space to work, and you don’t want them tripping over cords or cables. Move furniture and other obstacles out of the way so they can get to the problem area easily.
  • Turn off the water supply to the affected area. This can usually be done at either the main water cutoff valve in your house (a handle outside under the porch etc.) or at any individual valves for sinks, toilets, etc. You may need to use a wrench or pliers – if so, be careful not to damage the valve. Be sure that everyone in your household knows where this is and how to operate it.
  • If you can, turn off the gas supply to the affected area as well (for instance, if you have a gas stove or heating system). This operation varies depending on what your house is equipped with, but it will be obvious how to do this if you can find it.
  • Turn off any heating equipment if your emergency is triggered by a heater or other source of power. Turn off all electricity to the fixture to avoid pressure buildup or hot water burns.
  • If you spot the source of a water clog, you may try to remove it with a plunger. However, if your garbage disposal fixture is faulty, we advise that you leave it for the pros.
  • Do not attempt to fix anything yourself unless you are very experienced – there’s no telling what might happen if someone without proper training tries to repair an impacted sewer line! When in doubt, call the pros.
  • Call your emergency plumber immediately. Tell them what the problem is and where you believe it to be in your home. The earlier they arrive, the better chance they can get everything fixed quickly!

Can I Bill my Water Damage Plumbing Charges to Homeowners Insurance?

Water damage can often be very costly to repair, and it is important to know what is and is not covered by your homeowners’ insurance policy. Many people mistakenly believe that their policy will cover any and all types of water damage, but this is not always the case. For instance, problems resulting from poorly maintained pipes or damage from gradual degradation of the pipes is not covered by the insurance policy.

However, your insurance may cover the damages if the leak was caused by sudden and accidental events, such as a burst pipe. Additionally, your insurance will likely cover the damages if you have a special endorsement on your policy that covers water damage from leaking plumbing.

It is important to carefully review your homeowner’s insurance policy and contact your insurance company if you have any questions about what is and is not covered. By knowing ahead of time what is and is not covered by your policy, you can avoid costly surprises in the event of a water damage emergency.
